  • Speedtree for Renderman

    Greetings everyone,

This is my first post here and I'm happy to join the community.

I'm sorry if this has been brought up before. I searched the forum and didn't find an answer.

I'm a third year VFX student, currently evaluating Speedtree.

I am having a problem which I'm not sure if it's a known bug.

I am trying to import models from Speedtree v8.1.5 to Maya 2018 using Speedtree for Renderman plugin.
My version of Renderman is 22.5

I noticed that the imported models have phong materials instead of PxrSurface just like regular imports as if the plugin is not working.

It works fine with Arnold and Arnold 5, which is why I'm assuming the problem resides within the plugin itself.

I did have a look at the Python script, although I'm not experienced in Python, and everything "seems" to be okay.

Could anyone help me with this issue?

    Best wishes

    Hello,

When you import, are you sure it's using the import plugin? That is, in the file dialog, make sure you set the file type to "SpeedTree for Renderman" and then import the stmat file. This should create PxrSurface materials for you.

If you're importing the FBX file directly, it will just use the standard FBX importer.

If you still have trouble, are you getting any errors printed in the console? You might be hitting a bug, and I can log to look into the script.

      Hello Greg,

      Thank you for your response.

I am indeed using the plugin and stmat files to import. I tried using the same files with Speedtree for Arnold and it works fine. So the problem resides within Speedtree for Renderman.

Also, I don't get any error messages in the console. I seems the script for Renderman doesn't run at all, and models are imported using the standard FBX importer.

Is there anything I can provide you with?

      Best

        Hello,

Yeah, it seems like there were some things wrong with the renderman material setup. It was failing, and then it would fall back to the normal fbx-imported materials.

I took another run at renderman. Try the attached script to see if it works better for you.
